How does Laser Hair Removal work?

The laser hair removal process involves a gentle beam of light directed onto the skin, which is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. Similar to how a dark shirt absorbs sunlight, the pigment in your hair absorbs light and converts it into heat. When heated sufficiently, the stem cells that line the hair follicle are disabled, preventing the hair from ever returning.

    Preparation

Before coming in for your appointment, we ask that you are showered with completely clean skin free of lotions, creams, oils or fragrances. Prior to treatment, the area should be shaved completely and to avoid irritation, your legs should be shaved no sooner than 24 hours prior to your appointment. Please do not wax, tweeze or epilate in between treatments.

You should also avoid sun exposure to the treatment area and use a broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 30+ daily. Do not use topical products that may cause sensitivity such as hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, retinoids and benzoyl peroxide for at least three days prior to treatment. Gentle cleansers and lotions are must.

What could stop your treatment on the day

    • Avoid skin treatments such as skin needling, chemical peels and resurfacing treatments (2 weeks prior), Advanced Brightening and Clearing Peel and Anti-Ageing Peel (4 weeks prior)
    • Direct sun exposure to the treatment area (2 weeks prior)
    • Fake tan and tanning products such as self-tanning moisturiser (2 weeks prior)
    • Solarium use (4 weeks prior)
    • Tanning drugs such as Melanotan Il (6 months prior)
    • Vitamin A/Retinol products (1 week prior)
    • If you are a Fitzpatrick 3 and above, you must be on a pigment blocker only on your face area

Your safety is our number one priority.

    Aftercare

Redness and swelling are normal and the treatment area may feel like a razor burn for a few hours after treatment. Application of Skin Simple POST-LASER GEL is highly recommended to ease discomfort and also give you better results. Hair in the treated area will shed over the source of two weeks and patchiness of hair growth is completely normal.

Excessive heat or sun exposure of the treated area can increase scarring, pigmentation and skin texture changes. You should avoid excessive heat such as saunas, working out or hot tubs for at least 24 hours post treatment.

Important Do's and Dont's Following your Laser Hair Treatment
    • Use your recommended skin simple products as instructed by your therapist including post - laser cooling gel.
    • Avoid direct sun expose to the treatment area for 2 weeks following treatment and ensure SPF is worn daily.
    • Avoid strenuous exercise or any heat - based activities such as saunas, spas or steam rooms for 48 hours post treatment.
    • Avoid direct heat or very hot showers within the first 1 - 2 days post treatment.
    • Avoid rubbing, picking or scratching at the skin following pigment treatments.
    • You may manually exfoliate the skin 5 days post treatment.
    What are the benefits?
    • Permanent Hair Reduction: Achieve long-lasting results with a significant reduction in hair growth.
    • Smoother, Silky Skin: Enjoy soft, smooth skin without the stubble or irritation from shaving or waxing.
    • Reduction of Ingrown Hairs: Laser hair removal targets hair follicles, reducing the occurrence of painful and unsightly ingrown hairs.
    • Affordable and Convenient: Save time and money in the long run by eliminating the need for frequent hair removal treatments.
    • Minimal Maintenance: After completing the recommended course of treatments, little to no maintenance is required, allowing you to enjoy hair-free skin effortlessly.
    • Precision and Efficiency: Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
    • Quick and Comfortable: Sessions are relatively fast, and the built-in cooling systems enhance comfort during the procedure.
    Is it expensive?

Laser hair removal is the fastest, most affordable and effective method for permanent hair reduction and requires little or no maintenance after the recommended  course of treatments. Alternative methods of hair removal are temporary requiring regular monthly or six weekly treatments.

    Is it permanent?

Laser hair removal provides a long-term solution to unwanted hair by significantly reducing hair growth. While individual results vary, most clients achieve a permanent reduction of 70-90% in the treated areas after completing the recommended course of treatments. This means that the majority of hair will not grow back, although occasional maintenance sessions may be required to sustain the results. For many, laser hair removal offers an effective and lasting solution for smooth, hair-free skin, minimising the need for traditional hair removal methods.

How many treatments will I need?

To effectively target and disable all hair follicles, multiple treatments are usually required. This is because hair grows in cycles, and each follicle must be treated during its active growth phase for the best results. Typically, a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart will ensure comprehensive coverage and optimal outcomes.

    Is it painful?

At The Skin Boutique, our laser treatments feature a Dynamic Cooling Device that emits continuous bursts of cold air before, during, and after each laser pulse. This cooling effect makes hair removal treatments almost painless. Clients often describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. For those with lower pain thresholds, we offer the option to apply a topical anesthetic for added comfort.

Is it suitable for pregnant mothers?

At The Skin Boutique Clinics, we can treat clients who are pregnant if they provide a doctor's note that gives the all-clear for the procedure. While there is no conclusive evidence that laser hair removal is harmful during pregnancy or breastfeeding, we prioritise your safety and well-being and recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before proceeding with treatment.

Can I have it whilst on medication?

Treatments are rarely affected by medication. Exceptions include medications which affect the skin’s sensitivity to light or alter skin pigmentation. For example, Roaccutane which should be ceased six months prior to treatment and Retin-A which should be ceased at least two to four weeks prior to treatment.

What's the difference between IPL vs Laser Hair Removal?

IPL also known as pulsed light technology is not actually a laser treatment at all. In contrast, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths, while laser uses single spectrum light. With more unfocused energy around the skin area, typically IPL requires more treatments and may produce less effective hair reduction.

We recommend our post-care products following laser hair removal to maximise results.
