What is Laser Hair Removal?

The laser removal of hair involves a gentle beam of light pulsed onto the skin and absorbed by the pigment in your hair. Like how a dark shirt absorbs sunlight, the pigment in your hair also absorbs light and converts it into heat.

When heated sufficiently, the stem cells that line the hair follicle are disabled and prevent the hair from ever returning.

The darker and thicker the hairs are, the lighter or fairer the skin will lead to more favourable results. This is because the energy from the laser is only absorbed by the hair and not by the skin. Clients with darker skin will still experience a reduction in hair but need additional treatments to ensure their safety.

More About This Treatment

Which areas can be treated by Laser Hair Removal?

We offer a variety of treatment areas to suit the needs of men and women. Popular treatment areas include laser hair removal for the face, underarms, brazilian and bikini line as well as half legs. But the options don't stop there!

We have many laser treatment options. Simply select the areas you'd like treated in the menu above, add to cart, and you're closer to smoother, softer, hair-free skin – No pain. No cuts. No irritation. No razor burn!

What to expect

The treatment is relatively quick and pain-free. Your therapist will ensure the area is suitable for treatment on the day and grid up the hairs to be treated. You may feel some heat and a flicking/pinching sensation which stops as soon as the pulse has occurred. To give you an idea – an underarm only takes about one minute!

We also have a Zimmer machine that delivers cold area to the area at the same time it’s being lasered to help with any discomfort, it’s also a great distraction!

Once the area has been lasered, Post Laser Gel will be applied, and you are free to go! Redness and swelling around the follicles are normal post treatment, therefore it’s important to keep the area as cool as possible for at least 24 hours. This means no excessive exercise, hot baths, tight clothing, sun exposure and regular application of a post Laser Gel will be your saviour! We recommend using Skin Simple Post-Laser Gel which you can purchase online or in clinic.

Preparation

Before coming in for your appointment, we ask that you are showered with completely clean skin free of lotions, creams, oils or fragrances. Prior to treatment, the area should be shaved completely and to avoid irritation, your legs should be shaved no sooner than 24 hours prior to your appointment. Please do not wax, tweeze or epilate in between treatments.

You should also avoid sun exposure to the treatment area and use a broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 30+ daily. Do not use topical products that may cause sensitivity such as hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, retinoids and benzoyl peroxide for at least three days prior to treatment. Gentle cleansers and lotions are ok.

Aftercare

Redness and swelling are normal and the treatment area may feel like a razor burn for a few hours after treatment. Feel free to use over-the-counter hydrocortisone or aloe vera to alleviate irritation and redness. Hair in the treated area will shed over the source of two weeks and patchiness of hair growth is completely normal.

Excessive heat or sun exposure of the treated area can increase scarring, pigmentation and skin texture changes. You should avoid excessive heat such as saunas, working out or hot tubs for at least 24 hours post treatment.

We recommend scheduling follow-up treatments for facial areas every 4-6 weeks, trunk areas every 6-8 weeks and leg areas every 8-10 weeks.

Frequently Asked Question's

Does laser hair removal hurt?

When it comes to pain, laser hair removal falls somewhere between shaving and waxing. It doesn’t burn quite like a wax does, but it definitely isn’t as painless as shaving. The good news is, it gets progressively less painful as the treatments continue and your hair becomes finer.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Using high-heat, laser hair removal heats the hair follicles which keeps new hairs from growing. Although you may have heard laser hair removal is the “permanent” solution to a hairless body, it only reduces the number and density of unwanted hairs, it doesn’t usually eliminate them completely.

The colour and thickness of the hair, the colour of your skin, the type of laser used and training of the person operating the laser can influence the success of the treatment. If the hairs are grey and have no melanin pigmentation, lasers won’t work to remove hair.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is considered a safe and effective solution for most people. You should always seek treatment from an expert and as a precaution you should consult your obstetrician during pregnancy.

Are there side effects from laser hair removal?

You must wear goggles during the treatment to prevent eye injury. During the first few treatments, it’s normal to experience pain, but as treatment continues at regular intervals, less pain will occur. Your skin will feel hot 15-30 minutes after your treatment and there may be swelling and redness for up to 24 hours.

More serious symptoms such as blisters or permanent scarring may occur in people with a recent suntan or those taking medications that may affect how their skin responds to sunlight.

How long does laser hair removal last?

While laser hair removal eliminates dark, dense hair, the truth is, it will grow back eventually, however, it will grow back finer and less coarse than what it was before.

What's the difference between IPL vs Laser Hair Removal?

IPL also known as pulsed light technology is not actually a laser treatment at all. In contrast, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths, while laser uses single spectrum light. With more unfocused energy around the skin area, typically IPL requires more treatments and may produce less effective hair reduction.
